They say love is a feeling that is involuntary, its something that happens to you that you cant control or shake off, Some say love is a decision you make; for whatever the mind will, nothing can deter. I am not sure which school of thought i should go with but experience seems to convince me that love really is a feeling.... like the love i have for my country. Its hard to understand where that comes from. In the midst of all the corruption scandals, injustices, political mishaps, misappropriation of funds in the government and my heart beats for this country in ways that even I cant explain. When i listen to the news, read the newspaper of watch current events on TV I cant help but wish things were different.
But again there are things about this country that just makes me proud to be apart of it; the childhood memories, the cultures, the beauty, the calmness, the generousity of the people and the love that you feel around you. Every Tanzanian child can remember the Tanzania patriotic song, its one of those rhythms that make you think of home. Sometimes it the delicacies that are special to this lands like, mangoes from Tabora that not only taste divine but also smell so good. Or eating vitumbuas with tea in the morning. Or drinking "kahawa chungu with kashatas......you gotta love this country.
I remember when I was a student in a different country and my friends would criticize and make fun of my country. Outnumbered, I always said, there will come a time when I will make my country proud. Well am not there yet but there are Tanzanians who have placed Tanzania in the global arena. I still hope and pray I will get there too. In the mean time I will give my heart to the work that our organization does to help poor Tanzanians but I will also enjoy being in this big city. The culture the people, the annoyance and all make Dar the place to be. so far i’ve based my happiness on how easy it is for me to escape to a swim in the ocean.
